Regional healthcare pioneers honoured at Arab Health Awards 2013

The highly anticipated winners of the Arab Health 2013 Achievement & Innovation Awards have been announced at a gala ceremony at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai, UAE with the attendance of more than 700 of the region's leading healthcare professionals, senior Government officials and special VIP industry guests.

The awards consisted of nine categories such as Excellence in Surgery Services, Young Surgeon of the Year Award, Cleveland Clinic Young Clinician of the Year, as well as the new Sustainable Hospital Award.

The awards are a fundamental part of the healthcare industry’s mission to inspire a passion for learning about health innovation and technology. By celebrating outstanding achievements, the Awards Program highlights the notable promise of health innovation and technology in the Arab region.

“This year’s awards ceremony showcased the true excellence of healthcare professionals in the region with more than 150 Award entry nominations from countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Lebanon, Bahrain and Oman. Those celebrated at the prestigious Awards ensure that we are headed in the direction that is needed to grow the healthcare industry within the region as a whole,” said Simon Page, Managing Director, Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, organisers of Arab Health.

Jan Schmitz-Huebsch, Principal of Booz & Co and a member of the Arab Health Awards judging panel said: “The depth and breadth of submissions for the Arab Health Awards embodies the progress and innovation that is evident in healthcare systems across the Middle East. While only few providers and individuals can be awarded, all who submitted deserve recognition for the substantial efforts they have embarked on to further improve healthcare in the region.”

The judging panel also included a range of internationally respected healthcare trade professionals including Ashraf Ismail, Managing Director, Middle East International Office, Joint Commission International, Dr. Fadi El-Jardali, Health Management and Policy, American University of Beirut, Accreditation Canada, Dr. Joel J. Nobel, Founder and President Emeritus, ECRI, Brian Johnston, CEO, The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards, and Malek El Husseini, Business Development Director, GE Healthcare, Middle East, who acted as an advisor for the Arab Health Awards.

“I am thrilled that Hamad Medical Corporation submission won the top award in ‘Sustainable Hospital Award’ category. This recognition reflects the great work done by Hamad Medical Corporation leadership and staff collaboratively for patient care. This award is dedicated to our Managing Director, Dr. Hanan al Kuwari and all the HMC family,” said Shakil Ahmad, Assistant Medical Director and Medical Administration of Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar commenting on their win for the Sustainable Hospital Award.

For the winner of the Outstanding Individual Award, the judging panel praised Dr. Zuleka Daud, Founder & Managing Director, Zulekha Healthcare Group. “Dr. Daud is a true pioneer, having brought quality medical care to the UAE long before others; a woman leader in health for decades, passionate about patient care. Dr Daud is simply the model for excellence in commitment to her chosen field.  The women of the region have for decades been the beneficiaries of her passion,” said the judges.

“Cleveland Clinic is pleased to once again honour a young physician who displays not only leadership, but also compassion for patients,” said Dr. Bill Ruschhaupt, Chairman of Cleveland Clinic Global Health Center and Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Young Clinician Award judging panel. “We are honoured to be a part of the Arab Health Awards, and plan to utilize this forum in the future so that we can continue to honour our industry’s future leaders.”
