I am responsible for all Human Resources activities within the Telecoms & Media division of Informa, and also oversee the graduate recruitment activities for the group.

Today we have one of our Performance Improvement business’ trainer in running a training programme for our senior managers, so I meet him to run through the content for the day, make sure he has everything he needs and introduce him to the HR Coordintaor who will be coordinating the course throughout the day. We also discuss the content upcoming training programmes and operational changes that are required to an ongoing programme he runs for us.

I’ve got half an hour to review my messages and emails before a team meeting. Several of the phone calls I’ve received are from recruiters wanting to place candidates with us, so I return a few of these and then respond to the queries I’ve received overnight from staff.

The HR Team sit down for our fortnightly team meeting, to review the progress of our ongoing projects and talk about any new issues that have come up since we last met. As there are only three of us, the workload is discussed and rearranged where necessary. It’s also coming up to payroll time so we discuss the various issues that need to be considered to ensure we have a smooth processing of payroll without any errors.

A staff member who is moving overseas but will continue to work for Informa, meets with me and their manager to discuss their relocation. We go through the elements of their contract that need to change, the benefits they’ll receive in their new country and how their new role will work in relation to their current responsibilities.

It’s the time of year where we recruit graduates for our Informa Sales Academy, so the HR Advisor and I sit down to discuss our progress against our project plan and timescale and the response to our adverts. We decide on a few new ideas for advertising and attracting candidates and begin to develop the assessment centre progress. We also review some new psychometric tests that we are considering using this year.

After the Sales Academy meeting, I sit down to plan the budget for the Sales Academy process to determine the cost per candidate to each division this year.

I review the recruitment that is currently being undertaken for vacant roles and discuss with the HR team and also the relevant managers the relative success they are having in finding suitable candidates. For those who are having difficulty in finding suitable applicants we look at different possibilities for attracting candidates.

I receive a phone call from the Group HR Advisor to discuss the upcoming HR Conference and agenda; he also has some queries about a contract for a senior employee which we discuss.

A manager comes to see me to discuss an issue with one of their staff members that they aren’t sure how to handle. We come up with a plan for the manager to implement that should ensure it’s resolved without any further problems.

I review changes to an HR policy that have been sent through by a colleague to ensure that they are suitable for my particular division. I make some suggested changes and email it back with my comments.

A senior manager meets with me to discuss some changes they have proposed to the structure of their department, and review the implications of those. This manager also wishes to discuss a potential promotion of another staff member and we review the current salary bands for positions at that level.

The Operations Board meeting is coming up in a few days so I prepare my board report; which requires the generation of several reports from SAP and the analysis of the statistics that I receive.

Catch up with the trainer to see how well the course has gone today and talk to some participants to obtain feedback.

I meet with the Chief Finance Officer regarding the current training and recruitment spend against budget and discuss adjustments that may be required for the remainder of the year to make sure we stay on track.

It’s a final check of the emails and messages to clear as much as possible before the morning and another busy day!
