BioTechniques, the International Journal of Life Science Methods, celebrates its silver anniversary on Sunday, April 6th during the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) annual meeting.

BioTechniques celebrates 25 years, 44 volumes, and 276 issues that have expanded the frontiers of biological research. This special issue features reviews by Editorial Board members and founders, covering the current conditions and future prospects of selected tools and technologies. Read the anniversary issue here.
Frank Eaton, founder and first publisher reminisces: ”Twenty-five years ago the idea burst into my head almost fully formed: I’d launch a new journal intended to unite many of the disparate life sciences by focusing on one increasingly important commonality—laboratory techniques and methods. It would take the novel approach of being both peer-reviewed and free of charge. I’d call it…BioTechniques.”
Today the journal boasts over 90,000 qualified subscribers worldwide. It continues its mission of publishing the best in contemporary laboratory methods and providing them without charge to researchers at the bench. Last year, the journal eliminated its only charge—the fee to authors for color illustrations.
“I first came to know BioTechniques as a competitor, soon after it was founded. Even then I acknowledged—publicly if grudgingly—the elegance of the conception.” says Douglas McCormick, Editorial Director. “BioTechniques was open access when open access wasn’t cool—before, in fact, “open access” was even created.”
The publication family has grown to include an Asia-Pacific Edition, a special thrice-yearly section on Preclinical Development, an annual Protocol Guide, and an e-newsletter, BioTechniques Weekly, which brings readers breaking news on research issues and funding opportunities.
This month, in recognition of the silver anniversary, BioTechniques published a 25th anniversary issue which assesses two and a half decades of life science research, featuring articles written by industry thought leaders, timeless mementos, and profiles of leading companies and products.
